Theresa May has announced that she will be stepping down as Prime Minister on 7 June. In a speech outside 10 Downing Street, Mrs. May said it was in the “best interests of the country” for a new leader to take over.
She will remain as caretaker PM until a new Conservative leader is elected – a process which could take several weeks.
Mrs. May has been under pressure to resign since her Brexit deal was rejected by MPs three times.
In her speech, she said she had done everything she could to convince MPs to back her deal.
“I have done everything I can to convince MPs to back that deal. sadly, I have not been able to do so. I tried three times,” she said.
“I believe it was right to persevere, even when the odds against success seemed high.
“But it is now clear to me that it is in the best interests of the country for a new prime minister to take over.”
Mrs. May will now go to Buckingham Palace to ask the Queen to dissolve Parliament ahead of the 22 May European elections.
